Unveiling the Dark: Post Death Soundtrack's Veil Lifter

Post Death Soundtrack's latest opus, Veil Lifter, emerges as a tempestuous manifesto, a ten-track Molotov cocktail igniting doom, grunge, hardcore, and thrash into a volatile new record. Departing from the orchestrated industrial landscapes of their previous endeavor, It Will Come Out of Nowhere, Jon Ireson and Stephen Moore steer sharply towards an untamed, organic live sound. This fresh approach, coined 'doom grunge', pays homage to their early inspirations – the likes of Alice in Chains, Black Sabbath, Nirvana, and The Stooges – while embracing contemporary heavyweights such as Russian Circles, Windhand, Queens of the Stone Age, and YOB. Within Veil Lifter, sludgy riffs collide with hardcore fury, hypnotic grooves entwine with empyrean ambience, crafting a singularly evocative sonic journey that beckons listeners into a realm where darkness and intensity reign supreme.

Thematically, Veil Lifter stands as a provocative, incisive, and unapologetically uncensored exploration. It serves as a fervent invocation of spiritual armament, a meditation on the omnipresence of mental illness within the collective psyche, and a bold confrontation of terrifying realities. The album's title, derived from an Eastern philosophical concept of "lifting the veil of ignorance," signifies a journey beyond the myriad masks of external forms and ideas. Shamanic visions, shadowy dreamscapes, scorched Earth, and an unyielding pursuit of solace converge to guide the protagonist through realms of introspection and transformation.

Steve Moore, reflecting on the genesis of Veil Lifter, reveals its deeply personal origins. Born amidst isolation, depression, addiction, and chaos, the album emerges as a cathartic expression of resilience and perseverance. Drawing upon heavy metaphor and dream language, Moore crafts a visceral tapestry of emotion, weaving together influences from Advaita, the Gita, Zen philosophy, and the teachings of Krishnamurti. Veil Lifter stands as a raw testament to the human spirit's capacity to endure and transcend adversity.

Dedicated to the memory of Moore's father, Ted George Moore, Veil Lifter symbolizes both homage and evolution. Jon Ireson echoes this sentiment, noting the album's departure from electronic production in favor of a raw, guitar-driven sound. Assembling the album's framework in whirlwind bursts of creativity, the duo infuses each track with a potent blend of intensity and introspection. Collaborator Casey Lewis adds further depth and dynamism, amplifying the album's visceral impact.

Veil Lifter is slated for digital release on April 16th, with a limited edition vinyl run to follow. In anticipation, fans can immerse themselves in the album's haunting lead single, "Icy Underground," and the ferocious grunge metal anthem, "Lowdown Animal," available for streaming on Spotify. Pre-orders for the full album are also available on Bandcamp, offering enthusiasts an opportunity to delve into the lyrical depths of Veil Lifter.

As Post Death Soundtrack prepares to unveil their latest offering, Veil Lifter, audiences are invited to embark on a journey through darkness and transcendence, where the boundaries between the tangible and the ethereal dissolve, and the power of music becomes a conduit for transformation.

Amazing interview with NASH, a metalcore project.

Check out this incredible interview and learn more about NASH:

What initially inspired you to create NASH and delve into the cyberpunk universe?
Since I was very young, I have been passionate about technology and music. I always had "the dream" of being able to compose absolutely everything I wanted on computers with virtual instruments. But at the time, being able to compose via computer required a lot of time, very powerful and expensive machines and there was no possibility of having guitar VSTs or the emulations were really bad, I'm talking to you about that about 20 years ago.
I have evolved through different musical styles throughout my life as a musician. I have long wanted to combine the meeting of metal with the "raw" side of synthesizers to immerse the listener in this cyberpunk universe. Typically, "Doom" is in my opinion an example that could illustrate this process.

How do you see NASH contributing to the evolution of metalcore and its fusion with technology?
I have a small partnership with SUNO. AI which is an A.I that generates music. I only use it to generate voice that I incorporate around my composition, in this sense, I participate in the evolution of tomorrow's music. I think that the Japanese were the precursors with holographic virtual artists like in visual kei and tomorrow, with the expansion of AI like SUNO, we will see the emergence of them as if they were beings made of flesh and of blood !
I don't know if I'll one day take off in the metalcore scene but in any case I try to bring something different and original.

Can you elaborate on how you integrate synthetic elements from underground scenes into your music, and what influences these elements draw from?
The most complicated thing is actually adding synthesizer elements, you have to feel "the vibe" that emerges from the song to add the synths which will blend perfectly with the song. It takes a lot of time and I feel a bit like a chemist in a laboratory, I combine several elements until I find the right one. The dark electro scene/aggrotech demonstrates through its artists that there is no shortage of ideas, they inspire me a lot.
Also, I always immerse myself in a cyberpunk universe, fan of the Directors : Denis Villeneuve and Ridley Scott, I easily immerse myself in this world of images to project my creations, my search for inspiration. I would even add image AI also becomes a resource to exploit, you may have noticed but all my single covers in my project were generated by an AI.

What challenges have you faced in blending virtual instruments with the human voice, and how have you overcome them?
It's not in terms of VSTIs that I encountered challenges, it's more in the mixing of drum and guitar. On the one hand because I'm a total neophyte in this area, I tried as hard as I could to make it sound like a big sound. On the other hand, having an emulated guitar requires having a complete "signal chain" for it to sound: amp, eq etc.... And there it's the same, basic keyboard player I don't know anything about it at all so just like the search for synth sounds, I tried for months to make both sounds correctly. I'm really proud of the result, of course for purists it's far from perfect, but I tell myself that for a solo guy who doesn't know anything about it: the result is honest.
For the voice, it took me more than 4 years to find a singer who held up. I mean, finding singers isn't the hardest thing. It's finding serious people on a human level that caused me the most concern: you can't imagine how hard is… you can find singers who tell you "I love your music, I want to do a feat on it !” and then... you compose something for them, ask some news and suddenly becomes an embarrassing radio silence. I'm going to sound a little harsh, but I find that singers today are really starlets who want everything without making the slightest effort upstream, or on longevity.
But I believe that complacency and laziness is a more general problem in our societies. During these 4 years, I wasted a lot of time with one in particular who brought me more trouble than added value to my compositions, this guy is the perfect stereotype of personal sufficiency, a sort of "golem dreamers" as we say in French. But allowed me to open my eyes to what I really wanted and what I no longer wanted.
This is also why I launched my solo project, I had a few groups before but often complacency, immaturity, hypocrisy take precedence over the desire to really share a group of musicians. I think that for many musicians who find themselves faced with this type of problem, artificial intelligence will solve this...

Which specific aspects of renowned bands like Bad Omens, Bring Me the Horizon, Erra, Make Them Suffer, and I See Stars have influenced NASH's sound the most?
Creativity. What makes a band famous? In my opinion: originality, creation and a voice that stands out from the ordinary. Singing is one thing, performing is another.
For me, these groups are creators who think outside the box to offer listeners a world of sound far from a standard group of which there are plenty.

Could you shed some light on the process of generating lyrics using a personalized language model and how these lyrics contribute to the thematic depth of NASH's music?
You can find a bunch of royalty-free AI models on “huggingface”. I'm not going to tell you which one I have, it's my little secret but in any case we're going through an incredible period within reach: you can nab an AI that generates text like another that generates sound or even tell you if you have cancer!
Not being a good lyricist at all, having an AI capable of producing lyrics was a small challenge and a way to extend my project on a technical level.
My current singer also does a lot of production work. I mean, he doesn't change any lines at all, he adapts them to his melodies/rhythms.

In what ways do the themes of humanity and technology interact within NASH's music, and what messages do you hope listeners take away from these explorations?
I try to project all the current and future problems of our societies in my compositions. I don't forbid myself any themes! But one of the “biggest” ones is the future of machines. People today do not realize how much everything will change in the coming years. They think it will happen in 20 years or 30 years... but the change is happening now. Machines, whether AI or automatons, are progressing at lightning speeds and little by little, they are replacing humans.
Laurent ALEXANDRE talks about it very well in these books and he tries to awaken the consciences of people but also of politicians. Look, a few days ago NEURALINK announced that it had chipped a human and did you see it? He can play, move a certain number of elements on his PC.
So if tomorrow we do not train the new generations, if we do not carry out transformations in the training and ability of people to adapt to AI, we will have a "mass" stupidized by advertising and consumerism incapable of mastering the AI tool. We could talk about it for a long time but the Cyberpunk universe that you can find in Blade Runner or Ghost in the Shell is, in my opinion, what awaits us tomorrow more than a world that would like to balance in the name of pseudo fairness.

What kind of experience do you aim to create for your audience during live performances, considering the immersive nature of NASH's music?
So that... I have lots of ideas, but I need money, ha ha! I have in mind to do live shows but before I can think about the show, I will already try to find Humans in symbiosis (:

Can you describe the significance of the blurred boundaries between the real and the virtual in NASH's musical universe, and how this concept influences your creative process?
As I told you, I don't believe this world is utopian. It's just an anticipation of the world of tomorrow. And all these issues nourish my creativity. My job is computer engineering and access to the digital world is partly a source of influence: it remains atoms which activate according to the binary orders that we send and yet it produces sound waves which, when combined, become music.
The synths are incredibly powerful in my ears, all these sounds transport me, create a soundscape, this is how the ideas start to come!

Looking ahead, what future developments or collaborations do you envision for NASH, both musically and conceptually, as you continue to explore the intersection of music and technology?
I remain open to all suggestions. I've been doing a bit of promotion recently, and I have a small label that wants a lineup, so I'll start with that. For the rest, as indicated on my insta: if singers are interested in doing a collab, I am definitely willing!
I will also continue my project with SUNO and I will see. I don't worry, I do things according to my desires and the opportunities that open up to me. I love music, I love writing and that’s all that matters. My deepest desire with NASH is to share this with people who are sensitive to this style. Afterward, whether it doesn't work or not in the end, I don't care as long as I enjoy doing this in my studio.

If you discover my project, if you liked it: spread the word and share my linktree: https://nash.ws
Thank you for this interview: "The World is built in a wall that separates kind. Tell either side there's no wall, you've bought a war"
Is this so far from what we are experiencing?

Bring Me The Horizon's Drown performed by Darkness Is My Canvas - New EP out later in 2023!

Promo pic by Santtu Särkäs

Finnish Helsinki-based progressive melodic rock band Darkness Is My Canvas is set to release their new EP 'White Noise' later in 2023 via Inverse Records. The second single 'Drown' from the upcoming EP is a track that needs no further introduction. It's originally recorded by Bring Me The Horizon.

WATCH lyrics video: https://youtu.be/1RWsC0xLl0E

The band comments:
"Drown" is a song released by Bring Me The Horizon in 2014, which according to one interpretation, is about severe depression. Our singer Pete struggled with depression in his teenage years and he thinks that the song is about the depths you can sink into if you don't have trusted people around you. "Drown" has been an empowering song for us in the past few years and we wanted to make our own interpretation of it. Darkness Is My Canvas reflects many themes related to mental health in its music. Bring Me The Horizon also themes their lyrics in a way that they are universal and relatable through their own perspective. We have been listening to "Drown" since its release in 2014 and later added it to our setlist. In its final version, the song ended up on our EP without any hesitation from both us and Inverse Records. "Drown" may be so important to someone that radical changes to the song's atmosphere could cause alienation from it. We listened to different arrangements of "Drown" played by BMTH and picked the most suitable parts for our instruments. Panu wanted to add a 90s grunge vibe to the song. Pete's vocals range from soft baritone to screaming. We really like the end result - we managed to get a strong interpretation out of Pete. Mikko Kaakkuriniemi did a great job on the drums (which was not a surprise), and Panu had an easy time playing bass, guitars, and singing backing vocals.

BIOGRAPHY:

Darkness Is My Canvas (DIMC) was founded in Helsinki in 2017. The band plays melodic rock combined with progressive elements, stylistically influenced by bands such as Muse, Queen, Pink Floyd, Leprous, and on occasion also Porcupine Tree and My Chemical Romance. Their catchy melodies have many musical hooks, and the band likes to throw curve balls at the audience by changing time and style mid-song - and they do this completely intentionally. The imaginative sound of DIMC wells up from the melody-rich guitar playing of Panu and the voice of Pete, who, some say, sounds like the young David Bowie.
All the songs of DIMC come from the mind and pen of Pete and Panu, who are also the "founding fathers" of the band. They also play all the other instruments in the studio beside the drums, which are trusted to some of the top drummers in Finland. The mastering is done by none other than Grammy Award winner Nicolas Fournier (LA) who's had his hands on many recordings by many of the band's idols (Muse, Linkin Park, Adam Lambert, etc.).
DIMC was founded on what was left from the previous band of multi-instrumentalist Panu and lead singer/guitarist Pete. It was called May:Day, and it represented some sort of an amalgamation of Finnish progressive rock of the 70s and more modern Finnish rock music. Should someone want to listen to their album "I", they will find it by digging through the Internet, as it has not been officially released. DIMC needed to distinguish themselves from the previous band as they changed their language from Finnish to English and their style became more nuanced.
To date, DIMC has released one EP called "Monsters'' and one single called "The Game". Their songs have been downloaded quite nicely from streaming services such as Spotify, in which the counter reached 20 000 this March.

Piper releases debut album ”What is the heart for?”

Through the passing of time and emotions, a sense on wholeness gets channelled into music in Piper's debut album "What is the heart for?". The noise of the world, the sudden silence, eternal longing and the stage that is nature form the themes of The Finnish artist Päivi Sihvonen's debut album. Fully written and composed by the artist herself, the songs tell the story of the woman and the piano, and life's trials and tribulations. Päivi also performs all songs, making the songs deeply personal and connected to her own experiences and emotions that reflect the hardships of life.

ON A FANTASY JOURNEY TO MELANCHOLY

I set out to realize my musical dream with my debut album "What is the heart for?". With it, I want to open up my musical vision of a fantasy world that you can completely immerse yourself in and escape to and create tunes. That world can be a bit broken and melancholic, but it is beautiful. It is a mixture of half-truths, dreams, illusions and fantasy, while being strongly connected to nature.

The lyrics connect the work into a story that carries from one song to the next. Each song has a distinct piano melancholy, but they are unique on their own. The melancholic piano metal you hear at the beginning of the album continues in the form of mournful keyboard notes and melodies until the end. The minor-chord sadness of the album is striking, and it's easy to sink into its beauty.

THE TONES AND COLORS OF THE MUSIC HEARD ON THE RECORD

The stage of the songs is strong nature: pine forests with paths filled with the scent of needles, the shores of thousands of lakes, the flower fields of nightless nights and the glow of the northern lights of the fells. The album's atmosphere is not light, you can hear a lot of sadness faced and felt during that period.

Without the tumultuous experiences of life, the album's story would hardly have been colored from the coal-black landscapes heard at the beginning of the album to the iridescent glow, painted like jewels in pastel shades. The lyrics and the moods of the songs have indeed gotten their driving force from the questions of being human. When lyrics started to emerge, Päivi set out to create an atmosphere around them on the piano. The story as a whole was divided into parts, from which songs began to interweave.

The album was made in collaboration with Saku Anttila, who arranged the songs and played all the other instruments along with Päivi's piano compositions. In the music, you can hear the creative interpretations of the working couple woven together. The result is a layered, "musical painting", in which Päivi figuratively drew the outlines of a piano note, and Saku completed her art with colors.

The entirety of the album is described by a sentence that was left to be told from the first instrumental song of the album due to the omission of the words:

"What is the heart for.. should listen to it more"

Another song from the Asylum! Alternative metallers Newtierra release 'Hopeless'

NEWTIERRA OFFER SOLACE FOR THE HOPELESS

"Pure music medicine. For your ears. For your mind. 'Cause we care about you."
-Newtierra

You are lost in a world torn apart, where everything you knew to be true has been consumed by the fires of chaos. All that you love is slowly breaking beneath an unbearable weight that increases with each passing hour. The pale sun grows colder and the nights seem to stretch out into forever, the hours of darkness gnawing at your strength and your sense of self. A parade of nightmares whisper to your soul that you are worthless, a stain upon the earth. Yet behind that snarling diatribe of cruelty there is a cool, clear voice that sings of peace. Within the oppressive shadows of fear there is still a light shining; a soft glow that illuminates a pathway to sanctuary. It leads to a door that is always open to the broken hearted and bereft. It leads to a place of warmth and open arms, to healing and hope for the hopeless. You are not alone.

Within the fractured fragility of their alternative metal sound Newtierra strive to carve out a place for tortured souls to rest, an asylum of understanding. They aim to teach those lost in sadness to smile once more, to help the fearful realise their potential through their songs. Their debut album, Dark Side, was presented as a full length therapy course and while the band work hard on their second extended strategy for personal salvation, they are keen not to neglect their patients. Hence they present new single, or outpatient procedure, 'Hopeless'. 'Hopeless' builds slowly but relentlessly, climbing gentle waves of sound to a climactic peak of visceral, aggressive darkness. Throughout it all the voice of F20.1 is a silver thread within the smoke, always at your side, a companion in the pain. Simple and elegant in its structure yet resplendent in its depth, 'Hopeless' is alive with overwhelming emotion and currents of tension and urgency rise within as it progresses. Infinitely replayable, it forms a boundless crucible, a receptacle for your sorrows that can never be filled.

'Hopeless' is released today, May 24th, in conjunction with a new video, which features F20.1 performing a stunningly expressive, skilled and sensual dance routine – channelling the emotions of the song and bringing them to life through her captivating movements. While we wait for the second full length therapy course from the Asylum, embrace the lessons of 'Hopeless' and let Newtierra cradle you in their arms, safe from the storms in your mind.

Inhuman Condition announces new EP

Florida death metallers Inhuman Condition have revealed the details of their new EP, entitled "Panic Prayer".  This marks the group's third release since their formation in early 2021.

Set for a July 21st release on Listenable Insanity Records, "Panic Prayer" features three new original compositions, 4 live songs, and a smashing cover of the Blue Oyster Cult classic hit "Godzilla".  With members of Obituary, Deicide, and Venom Inc, the trio is no stranger to extreme music, blending a mix of groovy death metal and thrash, with a pinch of hardcore.

The group have once again enlisted the help of art-extraordinaire Dan "Babe Ruth" Goldsworthy (Cradle Of Filth, Accept, Hakan, Alestorm) for the cover art for the EP. Goldsworthy's third album cover for the band features the bands "unofficial mascot", sometimes referred to as "the Rat God", who was on the group's 2021 debut "Rat°God", as well as 2022's follow-up album "Fearsick".

Kling says: "When you are face to face with the crushing weight of darkness, what will you reach for? Your wits? Your talisman given to you by an old family member? Or will you embrace the end? This thought will run through everyone's mind. How you handle that moment is individualistic at best.

Believe me, it's coming. Let's see your panic prayer."

Panic Prayer track-listing:

1. Civilized Holocaust

2. Final Credits

3. Panic Prayer

4. Godzilla

5. The Mold Testament (live)

6. Recycled Hate (live)

7. Euphoriphobia (live)

8. The Neck Step (live)

"Panic Prayer" will be available on CD, vinyl, cassette tape, as well as a unique box set.  Preorders for the album, as well as the first single/video will be released June 2nd at inhumancondition.bandcamp.com

The production for the album was done at Smoke & Mirrors Productions in Spring Hill, Florida, with Jeramie Kling and Taylor Nordberg mixing and mastering respectively. The live songs were recorded on their 2022 summer US tour with Deicide.

New acoustic version of 2017's "Let It Die" featuring Mutiny Within vocalist Chris Clancy is released as a new single!

X-Empire, from São Paulo, once again prove that within contemporary metal there are no boundaries, and those who don't try new challenges tend towards a dangerous stagnation within the moulds of how music is consumed nowadays.

Because of this, the quintet currently formed by Michel Villares (vocals/production), André Marques and Ricky Franco (guitars), Émerson Soares (bass) and André Luis (drums) have released on all digital platforms, their new acoustic version of the song "Let It Die", with the guest appearance by British singer Chris Clancy, from American band Mutiny Within, as the group's new single.

Listen to "Let It Die (Acoustic)" at https://onerpm.link/256776164089

Produced, Engineered, Mixed and Mastered by Michel Villares (M&H Studio - @meh.studio)

Co-Production and Additional Engineering by Ricky Franco (M&H Studio - @meh.studio)

"Let It Die", Michel Villares' first full composition, was originally released on the excellent and well praised 2017 album "Grief", also featuring Chris Clancy.

In 2023, already with the band's current lineup, "Let It Die" was revisited in acoustic format and brought new and incredible arrangements with more commercial accents created by the guitarist duo André Marques and Ricky Franco.

After all these years, the friendship and bonds between Chris and Michel never weakened, so much that Chris gave Michel singing lessons for 4 years and, also, being an excellent producer, was responsible for mixing and mastering the song "Hard To Breathe", released by X-Empire in 2020.

Like "Paralyzed (Acoustic)", released last year, "Let It Die (Acoustic)" will be part of the new acoustic EP entitled "Revised & Acoustic" that the band intends to release very soon, preceding "Catharsis", the long-awaited release of totally new stuff from the band.

In a few weeks, a music video for "Let It Die (Acoustic)" will be released on the band's official channel. Stay tuned!

Comments from the musicians about "Let It Die (Acoustic)":

Michel Villares commented on the participation: "At the time, Chris made us very comfortable. I sent him the melody, and he gave it back to me in 2 days in a much better way than I had written it and without changing the lyrics (laughs). All the emotional charge of the theme is felt in its parts. It turned out amazing."

About this new version of "Let It Die", bassist Émerson Soares commented, "Although we only released this version now, it has already been worked on for a while. It was one of the first songs we chose for this acoustic format and we worked hard on it to keep the original identity, but with different arrangements and vocal lines. Originally it had a strong chorus with Chris' interpretation, and now I believe we have managed to make it even better."

New guitarist Ricky Franco went further: "It was a unique and exciting experience to recreate 'Let It Die' in this way. Having total creative freedom to add new elements, such as synthesizers and guitar details, was incredible. And keeping the participation of Chris, one of the greatest singers in the world, in an even more exciting version was a question not only of honour, but of good taste."

André Marques also commented: "When I heard the original version, I always imagined how it would sound like an Alternative Rock ballad from Nickelback and Creed, for example (laughs). So I took the idea to the band to make it very commercial and the result was excellent."

Chris Clancy commented on his social network about his participation: "It was really impressive to see all of Michel's commitment to "Let It Die". It is very rewarding and uplifting for a musician to see and feel another musician's passion for their own art!"
